Thank God the DaVinci Code is Finally Here...

...Not because I can't wait to see the movie but because I'm hoping to see less of this guy's fat face. It's William Donahue, the Catholic League's bitchy goon and chief gay basher, who has been bloviating about disclaimers and boycotts on every television network for more than a year -- and doing so with all the composure of one of my drunk shrill aunts. In many ways, he's the film's best publicist. I simply don't get what all the controversy is about. The DaVinci Code is a novel -- it's fiction. The film version is entertainment, not a documentary on Catholicism. Where were these morally-superior zealots when priests were raping boys? Apparently that scandal was not as formidable a threat to the church's reputation as a fictional movie. These people are idiots. As DaVinci Code author Dan Brown said, "The Catholic Church survived the teachings of Galileo and Darwin, it'll surely survive a novel written by some guy from New Hampshire." The outcry only makes it look like they really do have something to hide after all.

I didn't read The Da Vinci Code... but I gotta tell you I love the word "zealot". Looking forward to the movie as well.

Good call Kate.... this guy is a complete moron. The Roman Catholic Church has many more issues that it needs to clean up other than arguing about a movie.....its their classic way of diverting attention to the real issues. Okay now I am getting off of my soapbox!

OK, I'll take a turn on the soapbox, EPB. One of Donahue's famous quotes on immorality is "Hollywood loves anal sex." Such a hypocrite. Clearly, many, many Catholic priests "love anal sex" too but he'd NEVER call that "immoral." Personally, I think he's just jealous and is in dire need of what his religion won't let him have.

SB: I really liked the book. It's a great read and I think you'd like it too.

I spent 8 years in Catholic school and the one lesson that I took away was that Jesus dug Mary Magdalene even though she was a prostitute/"sinner." Did they get married and have kids? I don't know and I don't care. Such a thing would never drive me away from my religion. But people like Donahue would...and have.

Great book but I was more impressed by your use of the word "bloviating". Nicely done Mama J.
